About Us
ABOUT THE SUMMIT
The African Small-scale Mining and Kidney Health Summit (ASK Summit) is the first continental platform dedicated to addressing one of Africa’s most overlooked public health challenges—the growing burden of chronic kidney disease associated with artisanal and small-scale mining.
Hosted in Takoradi, Ghana, the summit brings together the world’s leading nephrologists, toxicologists, mining experts, environmental scientists, policymakers, public health practitioners, researchers, development organisations and mining communities to examine the relationship between mining practices, environmental contamination and kidney disease.
By creating meaningful dialogue between sectors that have traditionally worked independently, ASK Summit seeks to transform scientific evidence into practical action that protects both livelihoods and lives.
Why This Summit Matters
Across Africa, millions depend on artisanal and small-scale mining for their income. Yet alongside its economic importance, the sector presents significant health and environmental risks. Long-term exposure to mercury, cyanide and other heavy metals has been increasingly associated with kidney damage and chronic kidney disease, while many affected communities remain undiagnosed, untreated and underrepresented in research. Despite the scale of the challenge, there has never been a dedicated African platform bringing together healthcare, mining, environmental and policy leaders to collectively address this issue. Until now.
Why Ghana?
Ghana is one of Africa’s leading mining nations and has become an important focal point in conversations surrounding artisanal mining, environmental stewardship and public health. Hosting the summit in Takoradi positions Ghana at the forefront of a growing global movement committed to responsible mining and improved health outcomes.
Takoradi Declaration
The defining outcome of the ASK Summit will be the adoption of the Takoradi Declaration—a landmark regional commitment that will establish a shared framework for protecting kidney health in mining-affected communities across West Africa.
Yareyeya Dialysis Renal Care Clinic
To demonstrate that the Takoradi Declaration is intended to deliver tangible and measurable impact, ASK Summit 2027 will launch its first flagship implementation initiative—the proposed Yareyeya Dialysis & Renal Care Clinic in Ghana’s Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal District.
